Chapter 12

The mountain air is so crisp and clean. A lot of people can’t deal with these elevations at all. I didn’t believe that I would take to it so easily at first myself. In the end I am just a guy from North East Nebraska. Yet here I am posted up on a mountain pass some ten thousand miles from home. I am here in Afghanistan fighting a war that I really don’t understand. Why am I here crosses my mind all of the time. I try and push the thought out of my mind as best I can. I try and focus on the mission alone, focus on one thing, my target. I have been posted up here for three days now. I parachuted into a mountain pass, awesome ass halo drop.

I have my target in my scope, I have been waiting here silently for far too long. My target is around forty years old yet he looks much older. He has lived in these mountains all of his life. Living is hard here, real hard. This man’s father died fighting the Russians, his older brother died fighting the Taliban, his younger brother died fighting us. He has led no less than twenty campaigns against our troops. This is why they have sent me, I am the problem solver, I am the hand of God.

I take a deep breath in and exhale. As I do so I pull my trigger, always pull the trigger on the exhale. The recoil of a fifty caliber is hard, it feels like a mule kicked you in the shoulder. As I watch through my scope I can see the air around the bullet moving as it drops. Instantly my targets chest explodes. Blood sprays the wall behind him as the bullet rips through his torso. A fifty caliber slug is the same as Thor’s hammer hitting you. I lay silent, not moving even in the slightest, I am invisible. I know that chaos is going on within the camp. Right now every one of his troops are looking for me, afraid that they will be next. I move slower than any animal. I call in my location on my GPS, a drone strike will be here any minuet to take out the rest of these roaches. I hope that my target is happy to be back with his father and brothers.

I open my eyes and I am back in this farm house in Pennsylvania just outside of Philly. I don’t know if I would rather be back on a mountain side in Afghanistan or here in this farm house. The reality is that both locations are dangerous. In all reality things were far easier back on the mountain all I had to worry about was myself. There were no philosophical beliefs to ponder, only the mission. Now each of my missions are based solely upon philosophical beliefs. On the mountain there was only take out my target and get out alive. Here
